Age UK Trading CIC, Appointment of two Non-Executive Directors

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Non-Executive Director of Age UK Trading CIC.

The Community Interest Company is a trading subsidiary of Age UK, the charity, and exists to provide income for the charity’s vital work for older people by operating a large retail operation, including a network of charity shops, and to drive excellence, quality and innovation in the provision of central support services, such as IT, HR, legal and finance. Its success, therefore, is essential to the success of the charity and the millions of older people its work supports.

As this pack explains, we are looking for two senior professionals with Board-level experience (not necessarily as Board members), one with expertise in retail operations and strategy, and another a digital and technology specialist.

Charity shops are a mainstay of high-streets, as well as generating significant and reliable income, for Age UK they are often the ‘front door’ to our brand and charitable work, making their contribution far more significant than income alone. It is a mature and highly competitive market, and in recent years we have invested in increasing profitability.

We’re looking for a senior professional to help us drive our ambitious retail strategy, innovate to stand out from a crowded field, and support us to manage the day-to-day challenges and risks that are inherent in any retail operation.

It is clear that digital and technology are critical enablers of the work of any large organisation and Age UK is no different. We have made a number of significant investments in recent years, including the implementation of a Microsoft Dynamics based CRM system, and our transfer in 2018 to a new out-sourced IT services provider, NIIT, to provide the platform for our future ambitions. We know too that with progress comes risk, and that we need to continue to ensure the safety of the data we hold.

We’re looking for a senior professional with considerable experience in all of these areas, in infrastructure, systems, and software, whose leading edge knowledge can help us to think differently about how to maximise the opportunities, and mitigate the risks, of the relentless pace of technological progress.

You’ll join a Board that is absolutely focused on ensuring that Age UK Trading CIC’s contribution to Age UK’s charitable work is maximised, that we achieve our social purpose as a CIC, generate significant income, provide value for money and deliver considerable ROI. You will help us to challenge and question and use our insight and expertise to provide solutions. And you will play an important part in shaping the future of Age UK Trading CIC, the charity, and its other trading and charitable subsidiaries.

I look forward to reviewing your application.

Chair, Age UK Trading CIC Board
