Location - London & Nationally
Salary - up to £120,000
Southbank Centre is a national flagship cultural institution, Europe’s largest arts centre, and one of the UK’s top five visitor attractions. We occupy an 11-acre site in the midst of London’s most vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames and we exist to provide great artistic experiences for everyone. Through art, we invite our visitors to enjoy shared cultural encounters together. To gaze. To listen. To be moved. To discover a new idea or a new perspective. Our impact and reach are significant, and we are respected internationally as an entrepreneurial and innovative convener of great artists and diverse audiences.
Like every other arts organisation, we’ve had an exceptionally tough year. We’re determined to demonstrate our capacity to remain innovative, disruptive and experimental in what we do, to be highly relevant to the artists with whom we want to work and to the audiences we want to attract. We will be a smaller, more nimble, more flexible and more inclusive organisation and are already proving our ability to pivot and change in response to circumstances. Our potential is as huge as it ever was and our future is exciting. We are now looking for a visionary, dynamic and inspirational Artistic Director to position us right at the heart of the cultural sector, both nationally and internationally.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will be responsible for the overall artistic vision at Southbank Centre, securing our place at the heart of the UK’s cultural landscape and helping to tell our story. You will develop a coherent vision for the art-forms, spaces and venues at Southbank Centre, building on our distinctive tradition of world-class programming with inclusion at its heart. Achieving the right balance between risk-taking, bold and innovative ideas and commercial success will be key. The successful candidate will be able to channel the wants and needs of audiences, both existing and new, and to articulate a clear and compelling vision for the organisation to staff, partners and all of its varied and many stakeholders.
As someone recognised for your outstanding artistic vision and ability to convey it compellingly, you will bring broad experience of creative leadership, preferably across multi-disciplinary art forms and a track record of developing and successfully delivering bold, innovative, high-profile ideas. Sensitive to the balance between artistic and commercial drivers, you will also have demonstrable experience of managing large venues or creative spaces and of finding the right ideas to attract sizeable, representative audiences for live events.
Southbank Centre is committed to diversity and inclusion and we firmly believe this helps us to be a more relevant and effective body. We are seeking candidates who have a proven record of driving equality and inclusion through organisations and who can help us increasingly listen to, and reflect, the communities that we serve. If you feel you are able to help us write the next chapter of our history, we look forward to hearing from you.
