Sustrans is the charity that makes it easier for people to walk and cycle. Our vision, of a society where the way that we travel creates healthier places and happier lives for everyone, has never been more relevant, or urgent. Across the UK, governments are pledging investment and action on active travel. We are working in partnership with communities, partner organisations and governments at all levels to make a real difference to everyone’s lives and drive the change that so many want to see – driven by our 700 employees, 3,200 volunteers and over 30,000 supporters and guided by our clear five-year strategy and its two priorities of Paths for Everyone and Liveable Cities and Towns for Everyone.
About the role
You will join a collaborative and high performing Executive Team and lead the strategy, delivery and operational performance of the external affairs portfolio across the UK. There are three key elements to this portfolio: strategic communications, fundraising & supporter management, and policy & public affairs.
You will be a key leader, spokesperson and ambassador for Sustrans externally, whilst also providing high-level strategic counsel to the chief executive, chair and other senior leaders within the charity, as appropriate, on matters related to the charity’s reputation, profile and its external environment.
You will be an accomplished Director with substantial experience of external affairs in organisations operating in complex environments. You may have experience in the third sector and working with charity boards – gained either through employment or having held a Trustee position in a similar sized charity as Sustrans. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of achievement in at least two of the following: strategic communications, fundraising and supporter management and/or policy and public affairs. You will also have a strong affinity with Sustrans’ purpose.
In return, we can offer you genuine flexibility around working patterns and the opportunity to be based anywhere in the UK. We embrace values-driven and inclusive leadership and we listen and make time for innovation through our people-centred culture. We are extremely proud of the results of our annual employee survey for 2020 which, with a 92% response rate, put us in the top 20% of UK employers for employee experience. This is a fantastic time to join Sustrans and we look forward to receiving your application.
Sustrans is moving to a blended approach to home/remote and office working, and so it is anticipated that the postholder will work from their home for the majority of the time. There will be a requirement to travel across the UK (when it is safe to do so), so access to the rail network is essential. The majority of the External Affairs team is based in Bristol and so periodic travel to the Bristol hub will be required.
Please visit our microsite at https://search.green-park.co.uk/sustrans/ for further information about the role and how to apply. The closing date for the receipt of completed applications is 11:59pm Sunday 20 June 2021.
Preliminary interviews will take place with our retained consultants, Green Park, in w/c 28 June. Final interviews will take place on 14 July.
