First Church Estates Commissioner

The Church Commissioners for England

As one of the largest charitable givers in the UK, the Church Commissioners’ work supports the Church of England as a Christian presence in every community. The Church Commissioners manage a diverse investment fund of £8.7bn, which has consistently delivered impressive performance against challenging targets.

The Commissioners’ expenditure objective is to distribute funds to support the mission and ministry of the Church of England over the long term, including grants for mission activities and ministry support, support for bishops’ and archbishops’ ministry and cathedral costs. The Church Commissioners ambition is to be at the forefront of responsible investment practice.

This is not a conventional non-executive role.  The First Commissioner is a trustee member of the Church Commissioners' Board, Chair of the Assets Committee, and an ex officio member of the General Synod.  They will provide leadership, direction and influence to the Board and Assets Committee, including matters of strategy and policy, commercial considerations, risk management and good governance.  They will also speak with authority to the wider Church and beyond.

The First Commissioner will have:

  • an outstanding track record in leadership
  • significant and recent experience of chairing a board or significant committee.
  • the ability to communicate with the Church, engaging seriously and influentially;
  • a track record in driving diversity
  • excellent people skills, enabling the appointee to work closely and effectively with both fellow trustees, staff teams and decision makers in the Church, in business and elsewhere.

The role would suit someone with a non-executive portfolio, perhaps new to a portfolio role, with investments experience in their background. You might bring financial, legal or commercial experience, and you will demonstrate significant ability to lead a large, complex organisation with a wide range of stakeholders. The time commitment is between two and three days a week, and the role is remunerated.

The Commissioners are a statutory corporation accountable to Parliament, General Synod and the Charity Commission. This is a Crown appointment, and the First Commissioner must be a member of the Church of England.
